Upgrade error, how do i escape

I bought a brandnew laptop and was upgrading xp to pro.
THe installation messed up because the disc is damaged
but now everytime i try to start it up it keeps trying to
go into the installation and has done something to some
of the orginal files. I just need to be able to format it
or get it to stop trying to set up , does anyone know how
to do this??

Boot with a Win98 startup disk, fdisk the partition and recreate a
partition. Then format the disk. Then start your XP installation and
let it format the empty partition NTFS.
