Upgrade causes network coonection to fail

We have a data server running ME, which works fine. In
trying to upgrade to XP, the LAN connection is disabled
because XP thinks the cable is unplugged. On restoring ME,
the connection works fine again.

Anyone help here? The network card is SiS900 on board.
 
Drivers perhaps (install latest XP ones for card) ?
