Upgrade a broken ME to XP

I had Posted this a week ago, but the site has been
trashed, I nevr read any answers... so I ask again

My ME operating system crashed on my C: drive (dialog box
said>Explorer.exe not responding, reinstall windows).
Apps & data are in tact, and I can boot into DOS from
startup disk. BUT my HP OEM ME reinstall will destroy
my data & my Apps... not a good choice.

SO I installed XP onto a clean partiton on my D: drive.
Cool >> Then backed up all my data from C: to CD's via
XP in Dual Boot mode... Cool, but C:ME is still trashed.

NOW I tried to "Upgrade" C: ME, from my XP windows
session.... BUT it only re-upgraded my XP on D: How can
I get it to Upgrade C:ME so I can get my original Apps
working back on C:(wish it to be) XP ????

Trying to save my apps....

You'll need to back up your files to a writable medium, such as tape or
writable CDs before you overwrite Windows Me with Windows XP. Assuming that
an operating system upgrade of any type will fix a badly-performing older
operating system is wrong, as the problems are migrated from the old OS to
the new OS.
Why not boot into Safe Mode in Win Me, and see if you can recover Win Me
first. If so, then create a backup set of your data, e-mail and
configuration settings, address and phone books onto a removable media such
as tape or writable CDs.
Once you have a backup, you can (and probably should) do a clean install
of Windows XP, and then do a clean re-install of all your applications. In
return for the weekend of work, you will also receive a clean-as-a-whistle
operating system with no vestige of the past on it.

Message received. I got it all backed up, so I will
resign myself to the clean install.

Thanks
