upgrade 98 to XP PRO

Hello,

I recently swapped out my mainboard / CPU for a new
mainboard and CPU (AMD Duron). The hardware seems ok, but
no longer runs Win98. No problem, I want to upgrade to XP.

So, when I try to upgrade, setup runs for a few seconds
and then displays:

file \i386\KDCOM.dll could not be loaded
error code is 4.

I have tried looking up the problem in the KB but did not
find any hits. I also tried running setup on a differnt
computer, just to see if I get past the error, I do. So,
I don't suspect the media. Does anyone have any
suggestions?

If not, could someone tell me how to get the product ID
for install support, when I can't install the product?

Thanks,
Geoff B.

This is worth noting. You should not expect a hardware upgrade no longer
support an older (but not ancient) OS. If you cannot get your old OS to
work, the problem may be in the way the new hardware is configured. You may
find your answer here, but your question is really a hardware issue.

It's a hardware issue. Installation failures with MS operating systems
usually are caused by 1) bad RAM; 2) bad hard drive. Test your
hardware.
