Every time I try to install the WUAU22.msi package on my
win XP machines I get the foloowing error:

"Microsoft Windows Update Auto Update requires Windows
2000 SP2 or Windows XP"
After I click "OK", the update fails.

Hi

You are mis-interpreting the error message (and you aren't the first one, it's
badly worded). Wuau22.msi can *only* be installed on Win2k SP2 and Win XP Gold
(SP0). All newer versions has the SUS client already installed, you only need
to configure the client to start using your SUS server (for details, see
chapter "Configuring the Automatic Updates client software" in the "Software
Update Services Deployment White Paper" downloadable from
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/windowsupdate/sus/default.asp :)

Fyi, there is a separate newsgroup for SUS:

microsoft.public.softwareupdatesvcs

news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.softwareupdatesvcs

URL to the group softwareupdatesvcs for those who uses the not so good Web
interface to access the newsgroups:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsser...t.mspx?dg=microsoft.public.softwareupdatesvcs

A Web site about SUS with a FAQ and a SUS forum:

Jim,

Torgeir is right on the money, that wuau22.msi is not
needed in XP Sp1 or W2k Sp3 or 4 or W2k3.

However, for XP if you are not setting the wuau options
from Active Directory GPO, but rather locally on the XP,
then you should import the updated wuau.adm into the
local policy.
