updating sp2

I have just reinstalled my Windows XP Pro and it will not allow me to have
any microsoft updates. It comes up with the error [Error number: 0x80004005

The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are
trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem.

Windows Update Newsgroup
For assisted support options:

Microsoft Online Assisted Support (no-cost for Windows Update issues)

I have tried everything and searched all of the self help and cannot find
any solution to the above messages.

Hi Andy,

I have a couple of thoughts.

You say that you reinstalled XP Pro. Was this installation CD one with SP2
already incorporated? If not, the very first thing I would try is to
download/install SP2 before attempting any other updates.

Also, are you trying to reach the Microsoft Update site using Internet
Explorer or some other browser? The MS Windows (and Office) downloads will
work ONLY while someone is using IE to reach the site.

Have you looked through and if need be posted to the experts in the Windows

Windows Updates work fine from Maxthon. ;)

Not so - there's an extension called IETab for Firefox that will allow
Firefox to access and download Windows updates....

A problem is preventing Windows from accurately checking the license for this computer.

Because that's a shell on top of IE......

Maxthon can run the same engine as Firefox too you know called Gecko. It
is just that Firefox is slow and has memory leaks like crazy why most
people don't bother with it.
