Updating exisiting website

I am updating an existing website for a friend. He knows nothing about it
and I know just a little more! Three issues:

1. Basically, the best way to do this is to import the whole website into
FrontPage, make changes to the files on my hard drive, and then republish it
to his site, choosing to replace files with the same name. Is this right?

2. Assuming this is right, I already imported the site, but the existing
rollover gifs for buttons did not import for some reason. I've looked in all
folders. Everything else is there. Any idea why the rollover images didn't
import?

3. Finally, how do I share this updated site with him before publishing it?
Burn to CD and mail it or is there some way to temporarily place it on the
site?

Import only brings down what your browser is "seeing". If his web site is FP
extension enabled (and working) you would Publish it down to your machine,
then make changes and Publish it via http:// method. Then you'll have
everything.

I don't know what you mean by "Publish it down to your machine." Publish is
not available unless I am in a page on my machine. Don't you mean to import
it? And if so, this is what I did.

He meant to open the web on your remote site, and publish it back to your
local machine.

OK, thanks. But it is not letting me do that. I get a message that the
location is wrong or is password protected. I don't have the password yet,
but even if I did, it's not opening a password window. What am I missing
here?

OK, then you need to use an FTP program (or the FTP mode in FP) to transfer
the files. make sure you transfer *all files and folders* from the server
including the images for the image-swaps.

Did you use File > Open Web/Site and then type in the URL to the site
(etc)? That is the usual method; not the "open with Frontpage" option in
the
browser.

You won't be able to do much without the site's passwords.

First of all, yes, I did use the Open Site method you described below. I
tried the FTP mode and got to a password window. So maybe this will work
once I get the password......This is one of those "some guy I hired built the
site years ago and I don't know what the password is" situations. Could be
interesting!

Just have the site owner call the host and reset the passwords...take but a
few minutes, if you have a good host.

You should have the password; your host should have supplied this when you
signed up for the hosting service.
