Updating AVG?

For the past week it has been impossible to update AVG. Anyone else having
this sort of problem? I love this software, but it might be time to dump it
for Avast. Anyone know of a solution to make it download?

Open the AVG folder in your machine and open the file "url.ini". Delete
what's in there and copy in the text at the end of this email, this will
let you connect to 3 different servers and you should find it a lot easier
to d/l an update.

Here's an updated version of url.ini as posted by c_e:

------------------------------------------------
[SERVER_NAME]
1=free_grisoft
2=ftp_grisoft
3=www_grisoft
4=akamai_grisoft

[SERVER_URL]
1=http://free.grisoft.cz/softw/60/fe
2=ftp.grisoft.com/pub/softw/60/fe/
3=http://www.grisoft.com/softw/60/fe/
4=http://www.grisoft.com/akm/softw/60/xx/
Actual URL=2
------------------------------------------------

(This will show ftp_grisoft in the drop-down list by default)

If you can't download from the inbuilt menu, then go here to get the update
you need:
http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_updt6.php?lng=fe

Re those changes you suggest for the url.ini file, it does not appear
to work for me as when I next went to update this file got changed
right back to what it was before!

Strange, it should have given you the option of 2 additional severs from the
drop down list on the update section

For the past week it has been impossible to update AVG. Anyone else having
this sort of problem? I love this software, but it might be time to dump it
for Avast. Anyone know of a solution to make it download?

Thanks for that. I've been having the same problem for over a week. The
new ini added www.grisoft.cz to the drop down menu (after rebooting) and am
downloading a 1.1mb update from it.

Their servers are getting hammered. Try updating at some off hour, like 3
AM.

I think I'll try this tip again. If you were to find that you had more
success getting the update from say No 4 could you change the
Actual URL=2 to Actual URL=4 to make it the default?
Thanks
DW.
You make it default by slecting it in the dropdown server list in control
centre update.It will auto change to whichever you use.In the past i found
the www.grisoft.cz (not free.grisoft.cz)was probably the best one to choose.

Remember to stop and restart AVG control center whenever a change is
made to url.ini file.

I use avast as my main virus software and AVG as my backup. The only way
I've been able to get AVG updates is by going to their website and manually
downloading it. That seems to work. I prefer avast which just
automatically connects and updates every few days.

I think Avast checks for updates every 4 hours like Norton. Avast seemed
to work fairly well when I tried it here... I had problems with it and
Outlook however, so I had to go back to Norton...

I've not had a problem with AVG updates until this past week or so.
Normally it just connects automatically. They must be having problems with
their servers.

I did this, rebooted and it still won't work. I think I'm going to try
Avast. Nothing to loose since it is free also :)
I've been having the same problem.
Did you install Avast, if so how is it doing?

Oddly enough after posting this, I was able to update.
http://free.grisoft.cz/softw/60/fe is the one that worked. I will see how
things go. I will keep AVG for now.
