Alternate Servers to Update AVG

R

Rheem

Lately there have been several versions of changes to the
AVG Url.ini file for relieving the problem of getting downloads.
This the one that works best for me.
R

Back up your existing url.ini and replace the text with:

[SERVER_NAME]
1=Main (Fast)
2=Free (Slow)
3=Alternate
4=DNSless 1
5=DNSless 2
6=DNSless 3

[SERVER_URL]
1=http://www.grisoft.com/softw/60/xx/
2=http://free.grisoft.cz/softw/60/fe/
3=http://files.grisoft.cz/softw/60/fe/
4=http://193.86.103.11/softw/60/fe/
5=http://193.86.103.21/softw/60/fe/
6=http://193.86.103.10/softw/60/fe/

It's been pointed out that there are several misprints in that list. The
first line under [SERVER_URL] should read
1=http://www.grisoft.com/softw/60/fe/
The last line should read Actual URL=6

kimmy, may I suggest that you shouldn't be pointing out misprints unless
you actually know what you are talking about ?

1=http://www.grisoft.com/softw/60/xx/ is a perfectly valid and working
server, and even if misnamed, it does work..
2. The 'ACTUAL URL' is simply which one is displayed in the window as
default, so any number 1 to 6 would do.

The latest verified working list is below.
The FTP url works 99 times out of 100.
Simply copy/paste over URL.INI

The latest verified working list is below.

What is the source of this information?

Why don't Grisoft supply the updated addresses to all users via a
download?

How stable is the revised setup information?

Why has access to AVG6 updates become so flaky recently?

Thanks. You appear to be correct about the function of the Actual URL=x
line. I wonder what programming language is involved? Can we enter comments
by starting a line with ; or rem or something? Also I tried the ftp link and
it worked quickly. As someone else also asked, I wonder how you come up with
these working links? Just curious. I don't care as long as they work! Or
should I be concerned about security here? I don't know, but FTP has
vulnerability, I hear.

This works for you? I tried it for several days and always got the message:

FORBIDDEN

You don't have permission to access /softw/60/xx/ on this server.

Browsing the directory is not allowed. Retrieving a specific file is
allowed. Your avg software knows to look for a file called avg6info.ctf
You can see it works if you went to

You appear to be replying underneath a signature separator, hence your
entire message being missing above.

Also why does AVG insist on putting a signature that starts with "dash dash
dash space" instead of "dash dash space" ?

Because they *want* that stupid (advertisement) sig to populate.
Doing it the right way would be counterproductive.

I intuit that you give some significance to the number of hyphens at the
start of a line, or some such, or your software does, but I don't believe
that has universal recognition or acceptance. It's all just text.

Some of that text is interpreted as instruction or clue for the
client involved in processing the information within the envelope.

There is however at least an ad hoc standard for sig delimiters.

Two dashes and a space.

Here is one reference:

RFC 2646

4.3. Usenet Signature Convention

There is a convention in Usenet news of using "-- " as the separator
line between the body and the signature of a message....[...]...

I'm quite sure that there are many others.

This is completely text in this message, and yet it may appear
to you that there is an attachment because of Microsoft's OE
newsreader's interpretation interpretation of "begin "

begin Phantom.exe
Move along - there's nothing to see here.

I tried using this link and yes I was able to download an update extremely
quickly, however AVG became corrupted , so much so that I couldn't boot my
PC properly. I had to boot in safe mode, deactivate AVG, unistall it and
then reinstall it. Maybe it was coincidental, however, the problem only
occurred after using the xx url. After changing the xx reference to fe I
have yet to re-experience this problem.
