We have had update messages come through for our xp every
morning this week.

is there any way that hackers can activate the windows
update programme?

As long as your firewall is up and you all have secure
passwords and a decent antivirus.Then i suggest that its
just updates you can check this by taking a note of the
details of the downloads not installing them and then
giong to the windows update website.
