Updates.

When doing a manual update, is it normal for Defender to neither show it's
progress nor whether it's complete or not? Without a monitor like Zone Alarm
you don't even know if it's connecting. A bug? Or perhaps something that
needs to be fixed? TTFN.

Most of the time, but not always, when I initiate an update within the
program, I get a balloon notification of the start of the update, and one on
completion of the check--including notice that no update is available.

I believe that it is possible do globally disable balloon notifications on a
system--if that's been done, presumably this notice wouldn't appear.

You can see the progress in the system tray on bottom right corner. You
get a message saying connecting to Windows Defender update site or
something similar.

Windows Defender Live (Beta), help needed from Microsoft.
Except for the new download Signature Version 1.14.1314.1, all previous
versions have fallen into a loop to High Priority Definition Update
1.14.1314.1 for Beta Windows Defender (KB915597). The users of the Windows
OneCare Live (Beta) have downloaded automatically the file in excess of 54
times, as per the Update History, with no positive results. Previous results
of the Windows Defender (Beta) Definition Updates that worked are:
1.13.1276.3, 1.13.1272.4, 1.13.1276.16, 1.13.1282.6 and 1.13.1386.1 with KB
892519, 892519, 892519, 915597 and 915597 respectively. The loop failure
started when trying to update to 1.13.1288.5 and 1.13.1314.1 both with
KB915597, from older Signature Versions. Worst of all, no removal of the
Defender beta is possible nor installation of the newer 1314 version ontop of
the other.
Microsoft, please read also the many complains in the Discussion Groups Home

Well yes of course I've globally deactivated the useless balloon tips. So
this again is another step backwards in useability and simplicity. Now I can
neither tell whether I'm getting updates or if in fact they've been
installed? There does appear a tray icon with a green symbol over it, and I
presume that is supposed to depict downloading of definitions. A simple pop
up window informing of the successful updating of the product would be nice.
Such as you get with programs like Avast AV and just about every other
product on the market including the Windows updates themselves. Come on guys
this is showing a decided lack of usability for the average computer guy.
TTFN.
