Updates won't install on Vista Premium X64

Using an HP A6600F desktop, 3GB, new. Have been trying to install updates
recommended by MS Auto Updates. Downloads seem to go OK, but when the
installation begins, it stalls (locks, stops) at 25% completion. No matter
how long I wait, it goes no further. Tried shutting down, rebooting,
re-install, but no luck. Same result. So far the updates that won't install
are for 2007 MS Office Suite (SP1) and Excel 2007 Help. Error Codes
(respectively) are: 800706BE and 8024000B.

Have browsed through all kinds of help sites to no avail. Any help out there?

Error 800706BE and 8024000B

Download those update files manually to a folder from the Microsoft Download Center. Then disable your Anti Virus and Security Suites and disconnect from the Net. Then go and install those Updates

Thanks for the quick response. The KB number for the Excel 2007 Help is
(KB957242). The Office Suite does not show a KB number that I can find.

I should also note that since I first posted, I tried another re-boot and
the desktop wouldn't even reload until it tried to install the remaining 7
updates, which hung up exactly like it did before. So then I had to unplug
the CPU and do a recovery back to before any updates were installed this
week. I'm now afraid to try to udpate anything!

I'm wondering, could it be possible that the Office Suite that was installed
with the new computer not be compatable with Vista 64-bit? It says it's
certified for Vista but does not mention either 32 or 64 bit. I'm now
concerned that this X64 is going to be a bigger problem than I expected!

Peter,

Thanks for the good suggestion. I was reading through the descriptions of
the downloads on the Microsoft site you recommended and now wonder whether I
really need to install either of these. I can find no reference on my
computer to a program entitled "2007 Microsoft Office Suite SP1". I did have
MS Office Home and Student 2007 installed when I purchased the computer, but
it seems that Excel, Word, Power Point and OneNote were each installed
separately. No mention of a Suite or SP1.

The Excel update seems to only have revision to the "Help" files, which I
rarely use anyway.

Perhaps this is much ado about nothing and I should avoid these updates
altogether?
