It looks as if I am going to be needing to do a complete format and
re-install, got a few bugs and want them gone.
I have a dial-up connection, at home and it is a slow one. How can I
eaither find the backups that have been done and saved them and if I do save
them can I re-install them from my computer. If this is NOT possible, here at
work I have a T-1 is there a good way to have Microsoft search my home
computer and then jot down the updates needed and then come to work and
download them? Where do I go to find these updates wothout having Microsoft
search my work computer (win 98 on a Network, Home on is XP) and giving me a
list of the wrong updates.
I can see my Updates thru Add/Remove Software but have no clue where they
are and how to be able to execute them again.
Thansk for the Hlp in advance.
Oh! I have a system where XP came on the Computer, I do not have a XP CD.

It might be easier if you organised through work to bring you PC in and hook
it up to the network, as there are quite a few updates.

If you go to the knowledge base article that the patch is meant to fix, I
think you will find links to download the actual EXE you can install
manually.

BTW, don't download driver updates, as many report (me included!) that these
break devices rather than update the drivers.

Open a command prompt and type systeminfo, this will give you a rundown on
your PC, including the number of hotfixes installed, mine is 114.

Goog luck.

My system at home is Windows XP (Sp2) Multimedia Edition, just bought it in
July. I don't think there is a Ton of updates but enough that on a 28800
dial-up it would take awhile and I would rather have windows fully updated
before I continue to install Hardware and other software. I like the Firewall
to be in place for the other updates of the other hardware.. just in case.
I read a Windows Catalog letter and it made me think I could do an Profile
on their site from my home computer, come to work and access that profile and
do a download of all updates that Auto Updates found for my system at home.
did I read that right or am I lost in Space?
There should not be such a hassle to gain updates that are entitled to a
user, regardles if they bought the Computer with a Full Licensed version or
they went to Staples and bought the software. Not trying to be nasty, but it
is going to require many hours of downloading because Microsoft is trying to
protect their software. My time is worth money as well. I am sure that this
question has been asked at least a million times and I can not phanthom the
wasted manhours from all of the frustrated users who have to lose time
because Microsoft is concerned about Pirating or whatever.
This is a Legit Copy, Microsoft..... There must be a way to allow people
to download updates on faster connections and then go to thier computer and
download them. Why the deadlocks???????
The CD from Microsoft is the SP2 Cd only, I already have that update on
my computer. I need to do a Reformat and and a re-install, I want a squeaky
clean system because I have some bugs that are causing hassles.
Thanks folks....

After updates are installed on the system from microsoft update the
installation files are deleted so you can't save/reuse them. If you
know what updates will be needed they can be downloaded using the
windows update catalog and saved to CD.

HOW TO Download Windows Updates and Drivers from the Windows Update Catalog
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=323166

There are several ways to get an idea of what updates were installed.
From Microsoft Update look at the "Review your installation History".
Use that as a reference for what to download. If the update wasn't
installed from MU then it won't have a history entry. The history will
also not be present if you deleted certain files on the system (which is
sometimes recommended to resolve some update problems).

Another tool to see installed updates is to use the free tool Belarc
advisor. http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html. It will give an
inventory of installed hardware, software and licenses for some some of
those, and installed updates.

Another option is to reinstall windows, then go to Microsoft Update and
see what updates it needs. Using that list download the updates from
work using the Windows Update Catalog, burn to CD, and then install on
your system.

One additional question - what is the service pack level of the system?
If SP2 do you have SP2 on the installation CD? If not then SP2 will
need to be installed first after the reinstall, then updates added. The
best way to do this is to slipstream SP2 into the XP installation CD,
and do the installation with that. Then all you need are the post SP2
updates. Here are some links for how to slipstream.

Thanks, I have been doing searches and reading and what you say makes
sense except (don't you just hate the excepts?) my download history are long
numbers correct? I went to the Windows Catalog and I downloaded 7 Updates for
Windows XP sp2, there were three NET Framworks updates and they had names,
only ONE had a large number reference. So how do I cross these to be sure I
am updating in the proper sequnce ro updating what my computer needs?
I am trying to think ahead, cuz I need to start it when I get home.

Craig, first question, do you need the .Net framework? It's only needed
if you have programs that require it. There are two versions 1.1 and
2.0, and 2.0 does not necessarily supersede 1.1. I have a program that
uses 1.1, and there is an update for that. I don't need 2.0 and haven't
installed it. If you don't have any programs needing .Net framework you
don't need to get it.
