Updates creating a BSOD

After cleansing a friends computer with viruses and spyware whenever I try
installing the 29 updates available I eventually get a BSOD screen asking to
check on my video adapter and bios. I have updated both previously. I am
running XP Home Edition SP2.
Otherwise, the computer is running great.

Any thoughts on why this BSOD screen is appearing would be appreciated.

The same BSOD appears when I try to install IE 7 and Windows Media Player11.
I was able to install Mozilla Firefox without any issues.
