James

I have a new PC, running WinXP Pro/IE6. I turned off Automatic Update. I
went to the 'Update Webpage' to see if I want/needed any important updates
{like maybe the Time Change patch}.

I was greeted with two choices: 'Express' and 'Custom.' Immediately below:
'Download and Install.'

My question: If I click on 'Download and Install' - does it automatically
download and install - or, can I still choose which ones I want to install?

[I did click on this - and it 'appeared' Microsoft was gonna go ahead and
install'em - so I quickly canceled].

My bottom line: I want to pick and choose the updates I install - not
Microsoft.

Thanks - james

You're saying if after clicking on the 'Custom' button - and then clicking
on the 'Download and Install Now' button, I will still be able to choose?

[When I 'briefly' clicked on the download button - it sure looked like the
end result result would be to 'go ahead and install']

James - you can select which updates to install.
Most convenient way is to enable automatic update with the option for you to
be notified of available updates but not to install without your permission.
With this setting a "balloon" on the task bar will notify you of updates -
clicking on the notification icon will present a dialogue box for you to
select "express" or "custom" installation of the updates.

Select "custom" and the individual updates will be listed with a
description - at this point you can select which you want installed. After
the selection you will be given the option to "Do not inform me of these
updates again".

Whenever you visit the update site you will be reminded you have "hidden"
updates 0 the ones you deselected.

AJR, My problem was: evidently before clicking on 'Custom' would reveal
the available list, I was required to install [KB892130 - Genuine Advantage
Validation Tool]. That was the one wanting to automatically install itself.
I let it happen, then clicking on 'Custom' presented me with 46 to choose
from.

One more question: If I click on 'Express' - will it also, permit me to
select as it did if 'Custom'?

Thanks - james

Not all, if they're not security updates. The optionsl ones include WMP,
Remote Desktop (new version), and other things that just updates minor MP3
player drivers and stuff.
