Update patch...????

OK, so no-one can answer my earlier post, "Cannot
uninstall or upgrade?" - 16/09/2005. Thanks Microsoft!

Add Remove programs also shows a patch was installed but
no "add or remove" buttons are listed, instead a line
stating that "this patch cannot be removed"...????
What on earth is going on here...????

btw - Spybot S&D picked up 26 entries that Microsoft
Antispyware failed to recognise!

Patch for what?
Perhaps you should take that to a newsgroup specific to whatever the patch
belongs.

As for the 26 entries, the current build of MSAS does not detect cookies.

The patch was for Microsoft Antispyware thats why i
posted it here. It is listed below the MSAS icon in
add/remove prog's and tab indented and uses the MSAS icon
also. If I click on it there is a link that says "click
here for support information" but the only thing this
lists is the following,
"update ID - {D7F21D5E-9EE5-42DC-93C3-50B9F8ADDF30}"

A search on microsoft returns nothing.

And the 26 entries were for a range of things not just
cookies but this may be because the MSAS will not update
as per my previous post!

If you need more help can you give us the site & download
link for this patch that you say has added itself to
add/remove using the MSAS icon and disabled your real
time protection ?

Thanks

Andy

Where did you get it?
I do not have it.
The patch may be a form of malware itself.
Reboot to Safe Mode and attempt to uninstall the patch and MSAS:
Reboot tapping F8 each second.
Select Safe Mode at the menu

Run an updated virus scan.
Run SpyBot Search and Destroy.
Run AdAware.
Make sure each has been updated within the last few days.

I do not know where it came from? I assume it was from
the MSAS auto update. The pop up box that appears on
start-up at the bottom right of screen asked a few times
if i wanted to update to a newer version so i clicked yes.
Its not something i have downloaded from a site.

Ok - i'll have to research exactly how to do this, i'm
not very technical. When you say uninstall in safe mode,
I assume you are assuming there will be a add/remove
button that automatically appears next to the update icon
that doesn't appear when my computer is in normal mode?

Hi Again, Try Safe mode like Jupiter Jones suggests
(Reboot and keep tapping F8 and choose safe mode from the
list) Then when you get in safe mode Goto Add/Remove
Screen and try to remove this update patch,

My first thought is this was possibly a virus or other
form of malware especially with you saying its using the
MS Antispy icon in Add/Remove and in your earlier post
you said you couldnt activate some of your system
checkpoints for real time protection.

If this is in a folder or you know what the file was
called that installed the Update patch, right click the
file or folder and choose "Send To" then choose compressed
(zipped) folder and send it to my email address, Check
C:/drive Program Files for this update folder as it may
of installed itself into there.

With you saying it was a MSAS pop up asking you if you
wanted to update it makes it sound like a genuine update
but Ive not heard of a patch that uses the MSAS icon and
gets installed in the add/remove screen so Id like to
know exactly what this is.

Try removing this patch from Add/Remove Screen then use
Ccleaner to remove the temp and usused files off your
system

If you still have problems, download Hijack This and save
it to your desktop or C:drive and choose "System scan and
save logfile" when its finished scanning it will produce
a log in notepad, post that back as it may show if you
have malware running on your system but dont fix anything
with hijack this as most entries will be harmless or
essential, its a good start though to get a better idea
to whats causing you problems.

Go with Jupiter Jones comments first as you may be able
to remove this from Add/Remove in safe mode then on the
MSAS line you will see "Click Here for Support info"
click this then choose repair but if you do not have this
option your best removing MSAS as well as the patch and
downloading MS Antispy again once you get clean.

Does NOBODY recognize that the UPDATE ID that shows up is
A REG KEY VALUE if U R NOT technically inclined: LEAVE
THE REGISTRY ALONE...
Else, copy the data EXACTLY into the find now dialog in
REGEDIT... delete the key when found... Restart
computer... entry in A/R prog's should be gone THEN RE-
D/L latest version of MSAS and life will be perfect!!??
