Update notification by eMail?

Running WinXP Home SP2

Seems to me I was once able to get eMail notification of updates.

Is there still a way to get those notifications?

Using the automatic update service causes my modem to constantly
dial-up. I would like to disable the service, but do not know how else
I can know when updates are available.

Is there still a way I can get eMail notification?
