The update kb 931768 for ie7 stoped my ie from working. A popup would come up
and say something about downloading navcand from ieframe.dll and then
recomend cancling it. I had to uninstall the update.

This appears to be a widespread issue. I've read about it numerous times
already today. I've already sent out email to my clients warning of the
problem.

Dang Windows Updates! They seem to break more than they fix! :(

You can uninstall the update and wait for it to be fixed. At least IE
will work.

Sorry I haven't updated my IE7 machines yet. Do you want me too?

It's a crap shoot and it's up to you.

Ah... wait until next month. :(

Too bad there isn't an option to only install updates after they are at
least 2 months old, eh?

Yes well... I am not feeling that lucky today. :(

See 'Known issues with this security update > Controls that prompt before
they are loaded' section of http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931768

1. Try opening IE in No Add-ons mode & see if this behavior persists. If it
doesn't, change your IE home page to "blank" then close IE7 and reopen
normally (i.e., with all Add-ons enabled) and see if the behavior returns.

2. If still no joy, reopen in No Add-ons mode, reset IE settings
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737), close IE, open normally and see if
the behavior still persists.

This is all related to a cross-site security vulnerability addressed by
MS07-027/KB931768: http://secunia.com/advisories/24535/

Also try this fix, courtesy of MVP Robert Aldwinckle:

There is. Turn off AU, wait to hear all the issues and then update manually.

Thanks PA Bear, But I just gave up. If i reinstall again i can't get on the
net. I have contacted microsoft but all i get is the run around, seems they
have no idea's. So i'll just run with out their update. It is funny that i
have 3 computers , 2 on xp pro and 1 on xp home, only one of the xp pro's is
doing this, the others updated and work fine.

Let me point out that the vast majority of other IE7 users have installed
MS07-027/KB931768 and are not experiencing this problem (including myself,
on several machines). 24 hours ago, this did have all the signs of a
growing, widespread problem. We realize now that there's really only small
number of you experiencing this problem (though we do share your pain).

What we need to discover is what each affected machine has in common (e.g.,
another anti-phishing/-scam component, anti-virus, anti-spyware application,
third-party firewall, custom hosts file, custom site-blocking list).

Okay I have been quiet for the most part about Windows Updates. But on
multiple computers including XP, 2000, and 98SE machines. And it seems
Explorer Shell will crash and restart with about 1/3 of the updates. PIA
as some system tray icons won't show anymore until you logoff or reboot.
Sure the next monthly update will generally correct the issue. And I
finally had it! I switched to Aston Shell and years of this nonsense on
many of my computers are gone for good!

Thanks PA Bear, I whent to experts exchange and they suggested uninstalling
ie7 and going back to 6 then updating. I went back to 6 and went it started
microsoft installed the same patch kb931768 for 6 that gave me the trouble in
7. everything worked in 6 after the install so i reinstalled 7 and bingo it
works. I hope this will help someone else that has the same problem

Another user on my pc installed the update again. This user had no
problems with internet explorer. After changing to my own account
(administrator) I had the navcand pop- up again. I found a different
way to solve the problem. Start with Start > Run > Type or copy/paste
the following into the box:
iexplore.exe -nohome -extoff
then go to internetoptions > advanced and tick phishing filter
deactivate.
Et voila, problem is gone.

From a related thread in Windows Update newsgroup:

<QP>
The problem has been solved by me. Simply restore the temporary internet
files folder to the default folder and everything is working just fine!
