Update Installation Problem

I received the latest XP update and told the system to install it and
shutdown. 1.5 hours later I still have the "Please Wait...." window
displayed. Any thoughts on what may be happening??

Anytime software or a program hangs & idles the pc after 10 minutes or
so,shutdown the running process or in youre case shutdown the pc..Running
in a "loop" like you did can damage software & hardware..As for the problem,
shutdown the pc,after a few minutes,start pc,if it loops again,shutdown.On
pc start,tap the F8 key,safe-mode with a cmd prompt,enter xp as
administrator,
in cmd type:CHKDSK C: /F Agree to restart,type:EXIT Restart pc.

thanks --> didn't know if going ahead and shutting it down would hurt
anything. It came back up and the updates installed ok.
