[Update] Hamachi 0.9.9.7

T

techultra

With Hamachi you can organize two or more computers with an Internet
connection into their own virtual network for direct secure
communication. Hamachi is fast, secure and simple. It is also free.
Play LAN games. Access computers remotely. Use Windows File Sharing.
Run private Web or FTP servers. Communicate directly. Stay connected.
Hamachi is a zero-configuration virtual private networking application
with an open security architecture and NAT-to-NAT traversal
capabilities. Hamachi is secure. All Hamachi communications are
encrypted and authenticated with industry-standard algorithms and
protocols. Nobody will be able to see what two Hamachi peers are
talking about.

I don't have any experience with Hamachi nor it's publisher, Applied
Networking Inc. However, their website and forums are pretty
straightforward (except for the cryptography section said:
How it works

Hamachi is a UDP-based virtual private networking system. Its peers
utilize the help of a 3rd node called mediation server to locate
each other and to boot strap the connection between themselves. The
connection itself is direct and once it's established no traffic
flows through our servers.

So, they're accurate in calling this a VPN "system." From the looks of
it, the user(s) end up with a true point-to-point tunnelling protocol
*after* finding each other on a Hamachi server.

Benefit: easy VPN
Cost: Introduction of 3rd party to get the VPN initiated. A good thread
on their forum re: open source and trust issues is worth a scan to hear
from the developers directly (forums.hamachi.cc/viewtopic.php?t=864).

Thanks, I am an ABSOLUTE newbie on VPN. Never used one so I'm in the steep
learning curve mode.

Very interesting. A similar system is LogMeIn, but while that system is
free, in order to transfer files between the two systems after they are
connected, you have to pay $12.95 a month.

If Hamachi is free and stays that way, it will take off. I definitely
can use something like this to transfer files from and to my work and
home machines securely.

I'm going to try it out.
