Update fails & my genuine copy of windows says it's not genuine

I have a genuine copy of Windows XP. It has passed the validations many
times during previous Windows updates. However, there is currently an update
on my PC at the moment and each time I run it, it locks up half way through
and I have to re-boot my PC.

When my PC re-boots it then says that my PC is running a non-genuine copy of
windows and locks up again.

The only thing I can do is to re-boot into safe mode with command prompt and
run system restore.

As soon as I am back into Windows after the restore I am prompted with the
same 'updates are now ready to install' prompt.

My machine has not got a virus and I AM running a genuine copy of Windows.

I think the problem is the update that locks up half way through the install
every time.

Can anyone help please?

Paul: Dbl-click on the little yellow shield in the SysTray. On
the subsequent dialog, select 'Custom Install.' On the
following dialog, you *should* be able to permanently disable
(ie. uncheck) the Update that's causing you grief. HTH....

But my version is genuine and I would really like to sort this matter out and
not step around it.

Paul: I understand, but your XP installation is probably
corrupt, hence your problem. "Non-genuine" XP installations
will install all Windows Updates, so your status is not the
issue. You need a workaround or do a complete XP install from
scratch. The choice is yours....MR
