New in EssentialPIM 1.7

I wanted to write something, but can't because it's bad. It did not
recognize my EssPIM v. 1.6 ini file and did not start with my own
data file. Both are in the EssPIM folder on the D: partition. It now
makes
C:\Documents and Settings\-Myfolder-\Application Data\EssentialPIM\
with a test.epim file and an ini file. I used and downloaded the
portable version! I have not been able to set this differently. And a
portable version with uses a different partition for the ini file?

BTW, the help file is dated 18-02-2005!

When you run the new version, use File - Open and select the dirctory
& .epim file that you were using previously, and all will be well.

No, it isn't. The ini file with all the configuration settings is
still in
C:\Documents and Settings\-Myfolder-\Application Data\EssentialPIM\

And that's totally unacceptable for a "portable" version.

You're right. That's not good. However the .ini that is put in
C:\Documents and Settings\-Myfolder-\Application Data\EssentialPIM\ is
the one created when the new version is first run. When you open up
the old (correct) .epim file in the old directory, EssentialPIM.exe
will find the correct .ini file there.

It's a bug alright. Have you filed a bug report?

which is not true. The ini file is still in the c:\etc. folder, at
least here (my EssentialPIM folder is on
d:\office_stuff\EssentialPIM).

Hello,

it is great to see so many people using EPIM Free.

I would like to clarify the "portable" question.

If you installed Portable 1.7on a fixed drive, like your hard disk- do
not expect it to behave it like Portable. It will indeed save the INI
file into Application Data folder. That's by design, as Portable
version is naturally used on removable drives.

If you installed the Portable 1.7 onto a removable drive, like a flash
drive, and it still saves INI file in the wrong place- that's a bug and
we would like to hear about it, either on the forum or in the support
email.
If there is indeed a bug, we would be happy to promtly fix it.

Previous forum messages so far have not announced whether the Portable
version was indeed installed on removable drives, that's why we have
not taken any action yet.

Not a bug, it's intentional. And they don't seem to be especially
interested in changing it:

V. 1.6 did not do that, nor did it put the test.epim file there, so
why was this changed?

BTW, great piece of freeware!

Hello Gerry,

this was made for developers convenience, to have fewer installation
packages to compile.
But it seems to have a problem with several users, so I guess we will
have to go back to old scheme in 1.7.1, where version would be
independant of the type of the drive.

Thank you, Maxim. Keep up the good work.
