"EssentialPIM Free is the award-winning, absolutely free personal
information manager. Supported by a large community of users, EPIM has
been widely acknowledged as the best personal information management
system on any desktop or USB flash. It is not bloatware and has no
spyware or adware."

New in EssentialPIM 1.5.3:
* CSV Import significant speed increase
* Faster Schedule module display
* Languages sorted alphabetically
* EssentialPIM now remembers the latest used module when
minimizing in the system tray
* The Country field length is increased in the Contacts module
* Improved test database
* Known bugs fixed (all? there were a view annoying ones)

(there is a version for USB sticks).

Has anyone looked at this PIM, which is new to me:

http://www.otakpim.com/

There is no list of features but it has contacts/address book,
calendar, diary, Treepad like notes, To Do list, password manager,
bookmark manager, search. It looks rather promising (but can't be used
on "low" resolution (800 x 600) screens).

It's about time to select a PIM which will serve me for a long time,
and I have narrowed the choice down to these two, after having looked
at about everything I could find.

Last ones to bite the dust in my test lab: Chaos Manager (although I
like its simplicity) and Time & Chaos.

Thanks for the link to otak. I'll give it a whirl. I've been using
Essential PIM for a while now and really love the freeware version --
enough to maybe buy the SW version. I guess that was their intent,
maybe. But, the freeware vers is loaded with cool features and looks
really nice, too.

I'd also taken a look at Time & Chaos. Liked it pretty much. For those
who don't know, the previous vers of T&C is now available as freeware.

You might also want to take a look at the old ECCO, which I understand
is now released as freeware, though I think it hasn't been updated
since like 1997 or so.
Still, I liked it way-back-when.

Yes, but the beauty of EssentialPIM is that there is a version that can be
run off of an USB drive! That is the big selling feature for me. The
freeware USB version is very good. I also looked at the SW version but the
Pro version that runs off a USB drive was too pricey for me.

Actually there is. I overlooked it.
Damn those white on black pages.

"The following are the main features of Otak PIM:
* Calendar function - allows keying in of diary information.
* Thoughts function - a freeform data input mechanism stored in a
tree-like hierarchy.
* Address Book function.
* Task Master function - Task Master allows you to manage multiple
Task Lists or To Do Lists within Otak.
* Internet Bookmarks Manager.
* Password Manager.
* Global Search - search for whatever you've put in Otak."

The battle is between Otak and EssentialPIM (free version) afaiac.
EssentialPIM has a version for USB sticks, which is a major point in
its favour. On the other hand there is now a $war€ version of
Ess.PIM, after they experimented with a freeware version. So one must
fear for the continuation of the free version in the long run.

Hello everyone!

Ess.PIM, after they experimented with a freeware version. So one must

there is not need to worry. We strongly state, that, as before, EPIM
Free will be developed along with the Pro version. Releases of new
versions of "Free" and "Pro" will go hand in hand, adding new features.
For those who believes in power of money- we do not believe that
discontinuation of a Free version will bring us more paid clients.
We also love developing Free version, alghough it might sound strange
nowadays.

Thanks Maxim, that's very good news.

Not impressed with otakpim.

However, EssentialPIM Free looks interesting.

The FREE Version of Essential PM seems to
meet my needs. I may run into something in
the future that would make me buy it, but I
highly recommend the FREE version too!

Check out the SCREEN SHOTS. It really
is a very nice program, BETTER than OTAK
by miles. (I have no financial interest in Essential PM.)

I had Otak but removed it today in favor of E-PM.
