Geez, now I understand why it wants to look for an update every time I
start it... I already missed a couple!

Thanks, S. O. Meone for posting about the update, got it, installed it,
and am happy as a clam!

Additional note on EPIM: It is the one and only (as far as I know!) PIM
which can import M$'s Outlook files... lossless!

Thanks again!

You know, I'm taking another look at this PIM. And I'm finding things left
and right that I think need addressing, although it's not a bad program.

The first thing I noticed is that it lets you add fields to contact records,
which is very nice. And it lets you move those fields around in the
database, also very nice. But the moved fields aren't reflected in the
initial display of the address information when you're moving down your
address list. The original field order is maintained. I wish that
preference would be reflected in all views of the address book.

My usual dissatisfaction with the lack of envelope printing is really a
problem.

I don't like to have contacts, planner, todos and text database in one
file. The contacts and text database I keep, but I'd like to start a
new planner and new list of todos at the beginning of a news year.

Ach, I like it all in one place, particularly for backup and portability
purposes.

Now, if I could just find a converter from Time and Chaos to Essential PIM.
Time and Chaos has a very, very poor export capability, and the import into
EPIM just doesn't work well.

You can export the selected tasks into iCal and delete them from the
database. After this you can import iCal file into a new EPIM database
for archiving purposes, or leave them in iCal.

Best regards,

unfortunately Time and Chaos does not have open format.
If you could send us at epimsupport@... the example of Time and Chaos
exported file- we could see if it can be imported.

Great! I'll do it. (One problem with the export file -- the ubiquitous
presence of '''' in blank fields, can be handled with a text editor. But
the import function in EPIM has a tendency to truncate the first characters
of some fields.)

Hi Maxim,

Good to see someone from EPIM here! First let me thank you for a great
replacement for the heavilly bloated MS Outlook (in fact the only thing I
missed in Open Office was... a program like yours!).

Although you update the program quite regularly, is it really necessary
that the program wants to check for a new version upon every program
start, and that this check is nothing more than bringing up the browser?

This is the only "problem" (and a very minor one) I have with EPIM,
otherwise I do like it very much!

That was actually a small bug in 1.7.1. The program is supposed to ask
to offer to check for new version only once a week and only when at
least one month passed after release. Now 1.8 should work as expected.

Hi Max,

Thanks for replying! At least it doesn't ask me at every program start now!
:) We'll see in three weeks whether it works like you explained in the
above!

Hello Maxim,
I sent an email to 'support' reference the 1.7 'pro' version which was
'free' for a period last year. I have changed my computer, lost my 1.7

from your support team yet...thanks if you can help me.

Note the following though:

It appears to me that the free version is severely limited. For
instance, it will NOT synchronize with MS Outlook (for those who use
that crap.)

Hello,

I would say on the contrary, we have got quite a lof of people who say-
"I have got all I need with a Free version, I do not need your Pro".
Which makes us happy on one side and upsets on the other:)

It depends. If you need a basic PIM with planner, to do, calendar,
contacts and notes, EssentialPim is will do. In fact, I haven't found
anything better, and I've tried a lot of PIMs.

I don't use Outlook.

As I said, "it appears to me". That was after going over that list. If
other people are happy, then that's the way it is.

EssentialPIM seems to offer many useful
tools for GTD (Getting Things Done) --
even the freeware version. I am going
to see if it can be useful for outlining
or organizing writing projects as well.
(No, I am not affiliated with the project.)
