Update Error 80072efd

keep getting this error when trying to update Vista. I have switched my
firewall off, am not behind a proxy server, and can surf to the update site
without issue, yet this error appears constantly, for the last several days.

Something that MAY be related is the staggering slowness of IE on my Vista
machine. It's performance gradually slows down, until it is incapable of
fetching a page, a couple of hundred bytes per minute.

At the same time, an XP machine running on the same connection fetches pages
100% successfully at high speed. Could the error and this myserious slowness
be related?

Hello Sean,

For a resolution, regarding the Update Error, open Vista's Help and Support,
and then (in the Search Field) type; Update Error.

When the Search results are displayed, simply follow the instructions as
needed for your specific Error for the resolution.

Vista's Help and Support, and the "Start Search" Field, immediately above
Vista's Start Button, will be your best friend if ever conflicts arrive at
your Desktop.

I would appreciate it if you guys would have bothered actually reading my
post, since I quite clearly lay out the steps and checks that I have done. I
have ensured that the internet connection is working, I have ensured that I
can navigate to the update site, and I have ensured that the firewall is off
just in case. Since this is exactly what you have suggested, and what the
Help and Support suggests, and it does not work, I am asking for more ideas.

Some more information that may be related to this, it seems that no
application on my computer is capable of accessing the Internet other than
Internet Explorer. I checked it out, and even though Windows Firewall was
off, it appears that it was interfering with network traffic nonetheless,
only allowing through IE, not even the phishing checks or anything. Only by
stopping Windows Firewall in Services, have I managed to actually get any
kind of network access other than cripplingly slow IE.

Can anyone tell me why Windows Firewall blocks programs even when supposedly
stopped?

I've fixed it. It appears that when you change Windows Firewall to block
outgoing connections by default, it dramatically slows said outgoing
connections to virtually unusable speeds. It also apparently carries on
blocking and slowing down even when it is supposedly switched off. Only
shutting down the service actually stops the firewall, so one wonders why
there's firewall on/off option at all.

Restoring to default restored network performance and allowed checks like
update to go through okay. IE could handle the staggerringly huge slowdown,
but it looks like update couldn't.

Sean, I just tried that. I changed the Windows Firewall Service to DISABLED
(stopped it too) and I still have the problem. I have checked the firewall
and I am on a company network but as the I.T. guy, I can say that we are NOT
using a Proxy Server!
