Update and download problems

I have two PCs connected with a crossover cable and using internet connection sharing. Both PCs are running XP Pro
No problems with the gateway PC or the network but when I try to run Windows Update on the client PC I get a dialog box saying something like

The security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls and the page may not display properly

I acknowledge this dialog box and the update does not progress any further
I get the same result when I try to download QuickTime player on to this machine
I have tried adjusting the security settings but no change
Any ideas

Thanks

it is the security setting in IE's options for the internet zone

Thanks for the reply
Security settings in IE are set to the defaults but I still have the same problems
Have tried to run a virus check using the Trend Micro site but get the same message
