Barry Goffe
Director, Windows Vista Ultimate
Microsoft Corporation

When we launched Windows Vista in January 2007, we identified Windows
Ultimate Extras as a unique series of add-ons that would be available to
Windows Vista Ultimate customers. To date, we have released four sets of
Extras - Windows Hold'Em, 16 Language Packs for the Windows multi-language
user interface, Secure Online Key Backup, and Windows BitLocker Drive
Preparation Tool. We want to let our Windows Vista Ultimate customers know
that we are actively working to deliver the remaining Extras that we
identified in January. Our goal is to provide the highest-quality, most
secure and reliable offerings, and as a result we are continuing our work on
these offerings. We apologize for taking so long to provide a status update
to customers.

We intend to ship Windows DreamScene and the remaining 20 Language Packs by
the end of the summer. We will not ship the last two Extras showcased in
January (Windows DreamScene and the remaining 20 Language Packs) until they
meet the high quality bar required by our enthusiastic customers-and we
believe that we can achieve that bar by the end of this summer.

You paid 400 big ones for Vista? Really?

No, so far my count is 2 fluent and one in progress. =)

I just find it utterly ridiculous that Microsoft actually charges extra
for the ability to set the operating system language.

Just simply not a philosophy I agree with...

You know how much I've spent so far on Vista frank. =)

But regardless of that, isn't Ultimate 399 or something like that? That's
the number I remember anyway though do feel free to correct me if I'm
wrong. And I mean Microsofts base price...not some temporary special some
store might be currently running =)

I don't really know. It could be $400. We are volume licensed. I guess
each country sets their own price for Vista.
When I use to purchase individual copies I always got the upgrade
version of whatever it was.
Of course all software cost/expenses we incur are business expenses and
as such are deductible.
At least thats what our accounting firm tells us.:)

Remember that Vista sells for a higher price, outside the US. Here in
Australia, normal over-the-counter price for Vista Ultimate Upgrade is AUD
$495 (~USD $425).

Or to put that another way - Americans can buy Vista cheaper, than most
other people in the world (well in theory, anyway).

Cheers

Ah... Stephan... this borders on the "T" word. IMHO...

I couldn't agree more. Claiming the language packs as Vista Ultimate bonuses
is a bunch of bullshit. It looks like another group of Microsoft's got their
asses reamed by Mr. Gates again. So typical. What's next, we have to pay
extra if we want to use a hard drive and monitor with Windows. Now if they
want to do something extra that would be worth paying more for how about a
secure bug free OS... oh wait that's Vista <gag>

Somebody!

Well it just struck a nerve with me that is all. =)

See, I have no problem with MS charging more bucks for their bitlocker
thing. I have no problem with MS charging more for their dream scene
thing. I have no problem with MS charging more for that game.

Language support however!? To me that is one of the most important
features in an operating system no operating system should be without! The
fact that they charge more for it for it being an "extra" is ridiculous.

But then again, I also come out of a part of the world where most everyone
at least speaks two languages and where just walking down the street of
this less than 10,000 people town I will likely hear at least 3-4
different spoken languages within half an hour.

So to me, multi language support ranks far higher than useless gadgets
like Aero.

I believe the RRP in the UK for Ultimate is £369.99 which would be
about $639.19.

This must be why we are known as rip-off britain.

I can understand, now, your concern over the language issue. "T" word
withdrawn. ;-D

I am, by far, not an advanced user, but I did buy a copy of vista under the
premise of these "extras". Well at least I get free long boot times.
