Since installing 834707, my PC no longer gets it's IP adress allocated by
DCHP on my home LAN, and it can no longer ping the router's IP address.
It is therefore effectively disconnected from the network.

The problem persists after uninstalling 834707.

Any ideas how this can be fixed?

Kate, what Internet Explorer version are you running?
To determine this, go to your toolbar, click Help, then click About Internet
Explorer.
I'm going to first suggest that you try a System Restore, choose a date
prior to the installation of Update # 834707.

IE 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158

I already tried a system restore - it didn't solve the problem.

I see that I need that update as well, which I am a little more than
hesitant to do.

Okay, check your event viewer to see what the error message and number are.
To do this go to,
Start>Control Panel>Administrative Tools>event viewer.
Look for the DCHP errors and post back with the results.

In the event viewer, I can't find anything that looks explicitly like DCHP
errors.

In the application window, I have as recent errors:
Source: Perfnet
Event Id: 2004
"Unable to open the Service service Service performance data will not be
returned. Error code returned is in data DWORD 0"

I don't know what that refers to or it it's relevant.

Also my PC is a media center, and when it tries to download the TV program
guide from the internet I get
Event Id: 9
"LAN connection not working. Please check proxy settings and try again"

Many occurrences of the same error:

Source: FW1
Event ID:1
FW1: -->conds

Thanks for your efforts Ivee.
I've asked the PC manufacturer for support on this.
