Up-date issue?

I had to do a Windows recovery. All went well till I
decided to wait till after I down-loaded the Windows up-
date for SP1 since it had all the patches and security
issues covered, before I installed my "anti-virus
software".
Big mistake!
SP1 up-date tells you to disable your virus software so I
thought I was doing the right thing waiting till after up-
date before installing my virus software.
My question is how do I down-load SP1 without getting a
virus again?
It only took less then 1hr. of not having my virus
protection turned on to get a virus.
As I was downloading SP1, my computer started showing
that error message, "Shutting down System". Is this where
I got the virus?
How do I get my computer back to where it was before the
recovery without getting that Blast-it virus again?
Thank You, Linda
