Unwanted Programs at Start Up

J

James Varner

Since many software programs stealth themselves into the startup file when
they are installed the unintended consequence is the
slowing of the system, etc.

I know you can go into msconfig and disable the unwanted programs from
starting....but that takes the system out of the
"Normal Startup" mode.

How do I actually take the programs OUT of the Start Up file and have them
start only when I want them too?

Thank you.

You could nicely do a search for the filename - it will appear in one or many of
the startup files and then delete from there. You could also download the
program (FOC) from http://www.mlin.net which will give you a program in
Setting/Control Panel where you can disable the programs that bother you.
It will do instead of msconfig

James,

You CAN disable them from MSConfig and then remove these items from the
registry to return MSConfig to 'Normal Startup' mode:

This applies in XP home edition:

Items disabled within the MSConfig Startup Tab can be removed from that
location by editing the registry.

1.. Click Start > Run and in the ‘Run’ box, RegEdit.

2.. When the Registry Editor box shows, locate and double-click the
following:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Software
Microsoft
Shared Tools
MSConfig
Startupreg

3.. Under Startupreg, there will be a list of folders corresponding to the
inactive item in the MSConfig Startup Tab.

4.. Click on each one in turn and in the right-hand pane, there will be
the list of inactive items again corresponding to those shown in the
MSConfig Startup tab (those that have been ‘turned off’).

5.. Select and right-click on the chosen icon and from the Drop-Down box,
select Delete and click Yes

6.. Repeat this procedure for each item that is to be removed from the
right-hand pane

7.. Close the registry editor and then shut down and restart the computer
to complete the process. When the computer has been restarted, the unwanted
item(s) will have been removed from the Startup box in the System
Configuration Utility

If it's of help, feel free to use it but don't forget to back up the
registry first
