Hi there,

This is going to read stupid, and lacking grammer if the first bit is
anything to go by, but I have recently downloaded updates to XP, and also
the .NET Framework and a few other crtitical updates. I have also recently
set up Outlook to see the msnews.microsoft.com newsgroups.

I guess during one of these I must have left ticked or ticked a box to
receive emails from microsoft about updates and stuff, because now I seem to
be getting wall to wall messages with from MS Customer Service, Customer
Services, Security Division, and Inet with Subjects like:

Last Network Critical Update
Bug Message
Current Security upgrade etc etc

So what I am wondering is how I can stop them and where the most likely
place is that I can achieve this.

Many thanks in advance
Kindo M

Microsoft NEVER sends Email with attachments.

WHAT IS IT?
The Microsoft Product Support Services Security Team is issuing this alert
to advise customers to be on the alert for this virus as it spreads in the
wild. Customers are advised to review the information and take the
appropriate action for their environments.

IMPACT OF ATTACK: Mass Mailing, disabling processes related to security
software such as antivirus and firewall software

First mistake is probably using your actual email address online in this
or any public forum.

Hi Chris,

This is the text I got from the last but one:

<<Microsoft Partner

this is the latest version of security update, the "September 2003,
Cumulative Patch" update which fixes all known security vulnerabilities
affecting MS Internet Explorer, MS Outlook and MS Outlook Express as well as
three newly discovered vulnerabilities. Install now to help protect your
computer from these vulnerabilities, the most serious of which could allow
an attacker to run executable on your computer. This update includes the
functionality of all previously released patches.
And I just got another one which was from Inet EMail System, and had the
following contents
<<
Message from america.net

Undelivered mail to (e-mail address removed)

Message follows:
It had an attachment, but obviously I didn't open or save it.

The problem is I am getting maybe 25-50 per day all from different sources
and with different subjects, so is there a way to stop this???

Thanks for your prompt reply.
Cheers
Kindo

Obviously you are getting what is commonly being called the "Swen Virus".
The best way to get rid of them is to not accept ANY Executable file.
You can ask your e-mail administrator (ISP?) how you can block all
executable files, or you can get a good content administrator that will do
it for you (yes they will still come in, but they won't be able to do any
damage) or you can turn back on, the inbuilt security features of Outlook
that blocks exe's.

We use eScan for content & antivirus administration from www.mwti.net

Good luck

Stop displaying your e-mail address when posting to Usenet groups as this
is how the spammers get your e-mail address.
