unwanted item in "my computer"

In "my computer" these is an icon for NOMAD Zen 2/3, a mp3 player that my
friend a long time ago used to use with my computer. I have deleted the
software, and erased other remaining files that I found. Now, the little
icon for the mp3 player has changed to the "unknown file type" icon, but i
still can't remove it from the folder. Any way to remove it?

MANY Thanks

Have you looked in 'Device Manager' to uninstall any reference to a Nomad
device, then re-start?

pip22

that was a good idea, but i can't seem to find anything there.

anything else?

by the way, the icon is the remnance of a NOMAD Zen mp3 player software by
Creative. I have tried their support website, but i need the serial # and
stuff from the mp3 player which i don't have on hand, to get any help.

Do a system restore / backup your registy etc and then......

Navigate to (no wordwrap)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MyComputer\NameSpace

Scroll down the list of CLSIDs in the left pane (sequences like
{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E})
and look for one with a name similar to the one you want to delete in the
right pane. Export / Delete that key

Reopen "My Computer" and see if it's gone

Jon,

Thank you. Im not much an advanced user. Would you mind explaining:

1. As per "doing a system restore" do you just mean creating a "restore
point"? That i get.

2. What is "backing up my registry" and how do i do it?

Thanks so much for any knowledge you can pass along!

anything else?

Yes that's pretty much what I meant - setting a restore point (which also
includes saving the registry ), so that you could return to the original
state, if you make any mistakes in registry editing. Just a precaution.

In My Computer, where? If you meant the Control Panel, that is not My
Computer. If this is the case, go to Start/Search and type in: *.cpl.
When it appears, right click, delete.

Other options to verify that the program has been uninstalled from the
registry in part:

Troubleshooting, Removing and/or Cleaning Add or Remove Programs
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_a.htm#addremove

If uninstalled properly, depending on programming, the icon/listing will be
removed.
