Unwanted initial display in MS IE

I have always used "about:blank" as my default URL. Now, all of a sudden, on
opening IE, "about:blank: is displayed in the address field, but long columns
of links are displayed in the text area. I cannot figure out how to go back
to a blank test area.

How can I get back to "about:blank"? How can I keep whoever did this from
doing it again? Any help is MUCH appreciated.
