unwanted color variations

P

Paul

Hi,
I have a Lexmark x83 scanner/printer and have been using it for over a
year to scan Jewelry that my wife makes for use on a web catalog.
Though there have been small color variations in the images from the
real thing, they have been acceptable for what I am using them for. I
have been putting a paper sheet over the item and not closing the
cover to do the scan. This causes that paper to be raised a bit from
the glass. Just recently the sheet has taken on multiple colors that
are added in a combination of bands and halos. The strange part is,
that these do not show up if I scan directly to paper. It only
happens when I scan the image into the PC (Win98). It also does not
happen if I scan the plan paper background directly on the glass bed.
I have un-installed and re-installed the X83 and Video card software
more than once. I have opened the unit up and cleaned the underside
of the glass bed as well as the mirrors. What gets me is that it
doesn't happen when going directly to paper thus avoiding the PC. I
hope someone some ideas on what the cause of this is and some ideas on
how to fix it. I am working on getting example images to view.

Thanks,
Paul Coleman
