Unusual wait when saving document

Word 2000

I'm working on a very long document (90,000 word novel).
When I used to click the Save button, the little floppy disk icon at the
bottom information bar would flash on for no more than a second, blink once
or twice, and then disappear and I'd be back to editing mode.
But recently when I click Save, the icon blinks once or twice and goes away,
but then the insertion curser turns into an hourglass (it never did that
before) and holds up editing for up to 10 seconds before everything goes
back to normal.
This hourglass hold up occurs even when I click the save button a second
time and nothing is actually saved.

It may have happened after I played with the options in the Tools / options
/ Save menu, but I've tried to put everything back the way it was but I'm
all confused about the original settings and I can't find anything that
helps. Is there a way to set everything in Save back to original defaults?

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Oh! Good Heavens NO!

I'm not working from or saving to a floppy drive.
I don't even Have a floppy drive!!!

What I was referring to was the little black icon down at the bottom of any
Word 2000 document. It is next to the icon that looks like a little book
with a pencil writing in it. (Most of the time the little book icon has a
red X on it, but when I enter text, the pencil appears.)
I don't think the black floppy icon I'm referring to means "saving to
floppy" but rather, I think it just means that the document is being
saved---anywhere. It appears even when the document is being saved to the
hard disk (as in my case---I'm saving to the hard drive, but it still
appears.)

Phew! Sorry to have read you the riot act.
Okay. Here's what I would do. Save the file as RTF, close it, reopen it, and
re-save as a doc (under another name to be safe).
I would also disable fast saves under Tools-->Options-->Save tab.
See if that helps. Good luck! (would LOVE to know what your novel's about!)

Hi, Anne.

Okay, I saved as RTF and then opened that file. Sorry to say, it didn't
help.
I unchecked all the boxes in the Tools/Options/Save menu. No help.
Now the only box checked is Prompt to Save Normal Template.

Regarding my novel:
Stephen King is my hero and inspiration. I have written a story in a similar
vein to his style.
In fact, I like to say that if I gave this manuscript to 10 King fans and
told them it had
been written by him, at least one or two might just believe it.
(I didn't mean that to sound arrogant, I just meant it to emphasize the
subject and style of the story.)

to anyone for any reason.
But I promise to send you an autographed copy when I'm rich and famous.

I'm sorry, no. Not trying to talk you into anything, but if you wanted, you
could save to a new file, replace all o's with z's, all b's with q's... you
get the idea. If you did that with say 10 letters, I'm sure you could
quickly turn Stephen King into Mercer Meyer, and then send it, LOL!!
You could try Word troubleshooting. It really can't hurt.
