Unusual Question about recovering winmail

Newer computer. Using Vista Home Premium and Winmail

My Vista became corrupted such that I couldn't use most of the programs,
couldn't get to the net, etc. My Winmail was still working however (not on
net though). After many attempts to fix corruption problem, I had to
reinstall Vista (thru Acronis). Before I did I backed up everything,
including my winmail. Here's where it gets interesting.

I backed winmail folders up by changing the storage place from my C: drive
to an external drive. It worked. The emails were there at the time. I
opened some of them with my winmail. However after my acronis restoration
(went back a year) when I tried to capture the emails from the external
backup hard drive, I found the emails seemed to have vanished (no files in
the folders). But, at the same time, they seemed to be still there, because
the folders properties showed the seemingly empty folders had megabytes of
files in them--files that weren't visible and that winmail couldn't find to
transfer back (After recovery, winmail storage was back to C drive with
year-old messages). If this seems complicated, I'm sorry. If I knew what I
was doing, I could probably explain it better. (My files and folders are set
on "show hidden files").
