Unused files on a web

Is there any easy way to tell if a graphics, picture, or file is ever being
used. I've ran through the "Site Summary". The Unlinked files and
Unverified hyperlinks leave much to be desired. I can't trust them. Many
hyperlinks that are unverified actually work. It boils down to actually
trying each link to know for sure. The unused files seems to be the same
way. While these may be helpful tools, I seem to be left with doing this
the long way. I've also tried to search all files to see if the code calls
for any of the files that are shown as Unlinked. This has helped. All
these methods together help but no magic bullet.

If anyone has any other suggestions let me know. Currently I move files and
stuff (that I believe to be Not Used) to separate folder. I then remove the
folder and revisit all the pages to see if there are any errors. This is a
timely event. I want to make sure there's not a better way.

Thanks

Have you recalculated Hyperlinks and then run the unlinked file check.
Keep in mind that files called by links in javascript will show as unlinked.

JCO asks a question that I was about to too (tutu?)

Seriously...if there are a lot of images (i'm doing a forensic web cleanup), is there a way to work backwards to see if images in image folder are being used?...ie; see if there are hypers to it - without seeing every hyperlink - just images?

None of the previous webmasters ever deleted images so there are hundreds to wade through!

tnx,
Rob

yeah but thats kinda awkward since I don't know if they are being used or not, and by which page. see what I mean?

it would be cool if clicking on image file if the properties or something would tell me if it's linked or not.

you know what happens...webster deletes the image on a page but not from the folder...so the file(s) is still lurking and taking up space...and none of the images are named, they're all TXX_img_003.jpg or some other camera default name ....jeez its a pain!

there's gotta be an easy way to do this

Go into the Hyperlinks view, click on a file on the tree on the left. The
diagram shows links in and out. (Caveat: FP doesnt know about javascript
and other types links, just regular HTML ones)

Recalculate hyperlinks first.

Make backups by copying and pasting the thing into a "junk" folder first
(COPY AN PASTE, not drag). Then delete the originals where they were in the
first place.

After a while, you'll know the files are safe to delete all the way if no
errors show up in your web.

YES,,, That does what I want! THANKS!

Rob

The way that I check for unused images (in a new client project), is to
first copy all images via Windows Explorer to a folder on my desktop, then
in FP I delete all of the images in the web, then I run a Broken Hyperlink
report and import the missing images.

Read Sparky's answer (in this thread)...it works for me...although it still shows a few image links incorrectly but its MUCH better than the method I was previously using. Maybe it will help you as well.

| | | | | Have you recalculated Hyperlinks and then run the unlinked file check.
| | | Keep in mind that files called by links in javascript will show as
| | unlinked.

Yes this is the procedure I was using.
I create a trash folder and put things in it. Although I dragged them. But
I closed the site then moved the folder on my desktop and reopened the site.

We are on the same path. To bad their wasn't full proof method that could
catch everything.

Thomas,

Have you seen any of these free add ins_

http://www.xzmedia.com/frontfx/xzsoft.asp#FPage

I just downloaded the Print Web and the Image one...very cool...and free
The image indexer produces quite a light show of flashing pages as it runs through your web :-)

The Print Web is great too!

| The way that I check for unused images (in a new client project), is to
| first copy all images via Windows Explorer to a folder on my desktop, then
| in FP I delete all of the images in the web, then I run a Broken Hyperlink
| report and import the missing images.

Rob,

Those look interesting, however I very rarely use any add-ins.
