Phantom Files

Generating an Unlinked File report on my FP2003 site, I find that there are
a lot of unlinked files. However, many of these are not files that I have
created or imported into the site, but files that seem to be
system-generated or otherwise (mysteriously created). For instance

In a System Folder named '_overlay' there are several files such as
'myfilename.htm_nav_sumipntg010_bnr.gif' which are unlinked. [Sumi Painting
is of course a MS theme that I use in my site]

The question is how did these files get generated in the first place, why
are they unlinked and can I 'fix' these files by simply deleting them?

The files are created when you apply a theme to your site. If you're not
using a theme you can delete them. If you are using a theme leave the files
alone or you'll corrupt it.

David - If these files are created by the system, why are they orphan files,
i.e. unlinked?

The _overlay folder files are interim files need to generate the final _derived folder files

So if these overlay files are interim files and do not serve any purpose
after the final _derived folder is created, may I delete these _overlay
files / folders?

If you want to
- but they will be recreated every time you change your nav view or recalculate hyperlinks
IMHO
- you are wasting your time
