Why can't I use some of my old windows me programs under windows xp
profesional; they work well under windows xp home edition

If they work with Windows XP Home, they will work with Windows XP Pro.
Did you use Compatibility Mode with Windows XP Pro?
Do you have appropriate program updates?
Do you have the latest drivers?

Set them up to run in exactly the same way as they were set up to run in the
Home edition. They both have compatibility mode so there should be no
difference.
