Unsupported java/ java disabled....please help

My browser has a problem with java.
When I go to a website with a java applet on it, the
place where the java applet sohuld be, it displays a
message that says something along the lines of "your
browser doesn't support java or you must enable it"
I use IE6 and have upgraded, I looked at the internet
options -> advanced tab and could find no checkboxes
having anything to do with java, all of the defaults are
currently checked.
What can I do??

What version of Win are you running? I understand XP-pro (or
some versions of it?) do not come with Java [likely due to the
settlement with the US department of Injustice...]

You can always go to www.sun.com and get their Java runtime
environment ...
