unsufficient memory

sometimes this machine reports that windows does not have
sufficient memory available and starts to allocate more
virtual memory. Also when left on line for more than 48
hours the graphic build up on the desktop, when switching
windows, seems to take hours. After a reboot everything is
fine and normal again.
Yes, I have 256 MB of good RAM
Yes, I have firewall and recent MaAffee installed
Yes, I have installed all the microsoft updates
automatically..

Any suggestions out there.....? Thanks Bram

You probably have a memory leak. Make a note of
the amount of memory used by each application, as
shown by the Task Manager, then check again a few
hours later. The task which has increased its memory
allocation is probably the culprit.

Goodness; memory leak is likely, but 256MB for Win 2K and
what most of us do is pretty skinny resources/ Spend $25-
50 bucks and bring your computer up to par: 512, 640, or
even 768MB would allow you to have lots of "leaking".

Throwing more memory at the machine won't resolve
the problem - it will simply extend the time until it
rears its ugly head again.
