unsuccessful updates

I get a notice to install updates, i do and wait, then it says the install
was unsuccessful. after a while the notice returns and we dance again. If I
check history it was successful but also lists all the failures. How do I
stop the dance?

The Windows Update log file (Windowsupdate.log) might give a clue. This log
file is located in the %Windir% folder.
