unstable Win 16 subsystem

Hi all

Yesterday I tried to run a progamme I have had on my computer for
years and years - SF-INTERFACE - which I use to down load and upload
my Casio organiser data - I has always worked with XP before now.

but now it wont run - I get the Casio intro screen - and
then .........nothing... just the egg timer! When I Ctrl/Atl/Del I get
this message.

"The request to end the selected 16 bit task has timed out. Win 16
subsystem maybe unstable"

Unstable is the best way to discribe my feelings right now !!! : - )

Any idea out there

many thanks

John

I had the same problem with a 16 but subsystem becoming unstable. When I
check the processes under that task manager I would find wowexec was being
displayed with a one character space indentation and no memory being
allocated. The same symtom for the 16 bit application being run (In this case
setup.exe).

I restored the system to the beginnging of the XP install and started to
carefully reinstall programs and updates.

The 16 bit subsystem failed when the update called "KB943649" was installed.
It is related to Outlook. I am unsure what is happening when that update is
installed, but it appears to be the source of the 16 bit subsystem failure.
Unfortunately uninstalling the update does not fix the problem. You will
need to select a system restore point prior to downloading and installing
KB943649.

This problem only occurs on certain machines running Intel's Duo core
processors with 4gb of ram. I have been unable to duplicate this problem on
other systems.
