16 Bit sub system unstable?

When running a particular program I get an error message
that tells me that the 16-bit subsystem is unstable. How
can I rectify this, and why does this error occur?
 
Thank you for responding. I have read the article in the
knowledge base but it doesn't help. I still have the same
problem. This is a clean install of windows xp and
should run with no or very few problems. I have never
run into this problem before. Does it mean that any 16
bit programs I attempt to run on xp are prone to crashing
or not working at all?
