Unstable templates

I find that my normal. dot is continually being corrupted, either because I
paste in text from other documents or because I have made minor formats
changes to a specific piece of text. If I embolden a sentence I find that a
new style with "+bold" has been created. This happens even though the "add to
template" and "automatically update" boxes are unchecked. The end result is
unstable templates and frequent deleting of new and unwanted styles.

Uncheck - tools > options > edit > 'keep track of formatting' and the 'new
styles' should not be shown. Also set the style display option to 'Available
styles'
What you are seeing is normal behaviour and is not responsible for
corrupting your normal.dot template.

New styles are not being created and this is not corruption although it is a
feature which irritates many. By default the Styles and Formatting Pane
shows "Available Formatting" which includes styles and formatting in the
document. The actual styles all have an icon at the right hand side
indicating the type of style, direct formatting has none. You can change the
display to show the elements you wish by using the dropdown at the bottom.

This is not corruption. It is Word keeping track of your formatting. In this
way, it can suggest when you could achieve the same formatting by applying a
style. It is irritating although once you understand what is happening, it
can be useful. You can turn off the display.
Tools > Options > Edit
Uncheck "keep track of formatting."
