I have Microsoft office, student & home 2003. I am unable to send Outlook
mail and now Windows mail. I have had this problem despite many attempts to
fix it. I am trying to import mail from AOL accounts to my yahoo account.
Then I would like to try to send mail using yahoo.com and/or windows mail
which I cannot do at all.

These are the error messages I have been getting lately:

The host 'smtp' could not be found. Please verify that you have entered the
server name correctly.
Subject 'Online Banking Sign Up for Businesses', Account: 'pop3', Server:
'smtp', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 11001, Error
Number: 0x800CCC0D

The host 'pop3' could not be found. Please verify that you have entered the
server name correctly.
Account: 'pop3', Server: 'pop3', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL):
No, Socket Error: 11001, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D

I am an unsophisticated user. Please try to be as clear as you can with your
answers. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You are getting error messages because "smtp" and "pop3" are not valid
mail server names. You must use the mail server names supplied by
your mail service provider. If that is Yahoo, you have an added complication.
US-based free Yahoo accounts have webmail access only, no POP access.
Windows Mail handles POP mail but not Yahoo webmail.
Yahoo's solution is to pay Yahoo for premium "Mail Plus" service:
http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/original/mailplus/overview/index.html
and use the special settings for that service:
http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/original/mailplus/pop/pop-14.html

If you are OK with using a non-Yahoo email address, you have these other
solutions that will work with Windows Mail:
* Use the email address assigned to you by your ISP.
* Use a free Gmail, AOL, or Hotmail/Live account.

If you need more help with any of these solutions, just ask.

Hi Gary,

Thanks for your kind reply. Unfortunately, I wasn't kidding about the
"unsophisticated" part. I need a bit more explanation, please.

I have several e-mail accounts, including three AOL accounts, one Yahoo
account and one hotmail account.

When I am on Yahoo, I am able to import mail from the other accounts.
I am not trying to export Yahoo incoming mail to any other account.

I am trying to send NEW mail from my Yahoo account to any other account.
Whether I try to send mail to myself or others; AOL, Yahoo, g-mail, hotmail,
etc., it makes no difference. I am unable to send mail from Outlook (now
Windows), period.
The error messages I quoted were the messages I got trying to send new mail
to myself at AOL. However, I am unable to send mail using Outlook at all.

If the smtp and pop3 are not valid mail server names, then I am truly
confused, because I don't know what server names you are referring to (I
don't really know what you mean by "server names" either). Yahoo doesn't
explain, and AOL says to use aol.pop.com, etc.

I have several e-mails (with attachments) in my outgoing e-mail file, but
cannot send them. Please try again to help me to send these. Also, any web
page that offers the option of sending itself by mail with a link always
seems to link to Outlook. I wouldn't mind, except that I can't send mail with
Outlook. I would like to be able to.

Again, thank you for your continued patience as I try to understand these
things.

As I said, you CAN NOT use your Yahoo account for sending via
Windows Mail. Yahoo doesn't allow it unless you pay them extra.
If you don't want to pay Yahoo for that privilege, your only alternative
for sending via Windows Mail is to use it with one of the other
providers I mentioned earlier (Hotmail, Gmail, or AOL).
Let me know which way you want to go, and then I can provide
more detailed help.

Hi Gary,

I just used Outlook Express to send mail from my hotmail account. That
worked (I think), and thank you. However, something strange happened. I got
the following error message:
"Unable to logon to the server using Secure Password Authentication.
Account: 'pop.aol.com', Server: 'pop.aol.com', Protocol: POP3, Server
Response: '-ERR Unknown AUTHORIZING state command', Port: 995, Secure(SSL):
Yes, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC18"
I wasn't even aware I was sending anything from aol, although I have
tried to (unsucessfully) in the past.
When I look at "Outbox" and "Drafts" there are no items. However at the
bottom left of the OE error box it says 0 of 1 tasks have completed
successfully. I don't know if there is a message from my aol account, and if
so, I don't know how to find it. It may not even be relevant anymore, so I
probably should try to delete it, but first I would like to try to identify
it.
Complicating matters, when I check the "tasks" tab, I get an error re:
Check for new messages on 'pop.aol.com' Status: Failed. I have several aol
accounts, but I don't remember trying to access them through OE. How can I
delete or cancel that task?

Thank you for your kind assistance,
Jenondelina
