Unresponsive when attempting to do any kind of end procedure........

ive been scouring the net for help on this guys. it woudl be great if
anyone knew how to help me.

backstory;
ive been using this computer setup with no hardware change for a long
time. i keep my comp clean both on a hardware and on a software level
with knowledge of what belongs on my computer and what doesnt.
recently ive encountered a problem where my computer becomes
unresponsive when i attempt to shutdown. let me give you guys an
exact
description of the problem and some things ive noted in an attempt to
solve this.

1. i disabled the welcome and xp style log in screen a long time ago.
my xp requires the user to put in a username and password into a
rectangle dialog box in order to enter xp. on top of that, the user
must press ctrl alt and delete at the same time in order to even
begin
typing in the username and password.

2. once i am in xp if i want to shut down, i go to start menu and
click the shut down button once. the computer immediately becomes
unresponsive. the mouse can be moved, the task manager can be brought
up but once the task manager is quit, a "image" of th e task manager
stays frozen on the screen. i checked the tasks repeatedly and there
are no running tasks, i've even gone as far as to eliminate every
task
on the list starting from number 34 and down to around the 12-20
crucial tasks that can't be ended. still no dice.

3. if i end explorer.exe, and restart it, i gain full use of the
computer again but any attempt to shut down as described above will
cause the same situation to occur.

4. if i press ctrl alt delete and click the "shut down..." button in
the Windows Security box that pops up, the computer becomes
unresponsive like above, mouse movable, but the task manager won't
even come up if you try it this way.

5. if i log off and go to the screen that pops up when i first turn
on
my computer and attempt to shut down from the button on that screen,
it also becomes unresponsive.

6. once the computer becomes unresponsive in any of the situations,
it
always becomes responsive about four minutes later but the results
vary. it becomes responsive and throws me back to xp as if i never
touched the button.

7. following microsoft knowledge base insturctions, i went to go
check
if i could shut down in safe mode. that is a positive, i can shut
down
in safe mode. microsoft says its a driver problem but i've made
checks
on my drivers and havent installed anything new recently.

8. i checked my bios and my settings are the same as they were for
months already.
since i cant get to the selection box at all its safe to say i cant
even restart the computer i believe because i cant even get to the
choice selection box. any help would be appreciated!

Hi,

Sounds like a corrupt network driver. When you are in safe mode - go to
device manager and selectively disable non-essential drivers. See if you can
isolate the problem. Start with your network adaptor.

Would not hurt to do a chkdsk /r and reboot. Also, lastly, a system restore?

Stop using those paper phone message pads
make the computer work for you.

alright thanks for the advice.

i went ahead and disabled various things and couldnt fix the problem.
i did however make another minor discovery. when the computer becomes
unresponsive as mentioned above, if i end explorer.exe in task
manager, the computer becomes responsive again even before i start up
explorer.exe again. i can move the windows around, run programs but
the taskbar is absent, thus why i am forced to start explorer.exe up
again. could explorer.exe possibly be corrupt? everything is pointing
to something wrong with explorer.exe itself.

if explorer.exe is corrupt it still doesn't explain why this problem
is absent in safe mode because explorer.exe is run in safe mode as
well.

any more help?

ive made some more discoveries which lead me to believe ill figure out
how to solve this problem within a couple of hours. infact ive already
found a makeshift way to shut down my computer without harming it for
the time being until i figure this problem out.

while i went back to the task manager processes approach, on a quest
to shut down all of the svchost.exe processes, one terminated the
remote procedure call which popped up a dialog box explaining so and
told me to save my work because the computer wuold be shut down. sure
enough when i went into the start menu and clicked shutdown the box
popped up with the problem gone. the computer shut off after the rpc
dialog box timer went and it shut off successfully so i can use this
method of ending svchost.exe to shut down the computer if i ever need
to.

still would like an official fix though.
