unreadable desktop

All the text has become corrupted into unreadable symbols under every icon on
the desktop and everywhere else within the operating system. Is there a way
to reverse this??

Not knowing crap about it, I would try shutting it down "Explorer.exe
in the Task Manager in the "Processes" tab and switch to
"Applications" tab, click on the "New Task..." button and type
"explorer" sans quotes.

Windows will restart the desktop and that might clear it up. Worth a
try before you follow the repair install advice. I have had it fix
some other issues with the desktop.

Do you have a ATI Radeon card and did you update it's drivers
recently?

I have the same problem. Have you been able to fix it? I was able to get
the icon labels back by using the Regional and Language Options in the
Control Panel (under text services and input languages, details then in the
new window, click Language bar and uncheck show the language bar on the
desktop - I did not have a language bar on the desktop, but this was checked
for some reason). The only language I use is English so I do not know how it
got checked. My task bar is still messed up and I have not rebooted to see
if it stays that way. I am running a full system scan with Norton Antivirus
and a spyware scan with Spysweeper. I do not know how it got this way, but
before it happened, I deleted something called GoldminerSE which I suspected
to be spyware and then did a disk cleanup. When I rebooted the computer my
login screen, desktop, taskbar, and menus were all messed up. I can get into
programs and all of my data files are OK, but it is hard tp work like this.
What did you run before it happened?

Thanks everyone for your input and assistance. I've managed to get this
problem to "go away" (by the drastic HD format and system reinstall method")
and I've been regretting doing that ever since!! I'm still rebuilding and
have assorted bugs and gremlins. My computer will never be the same as I had
no restore points or b/u's.
Hopefully this thread will save others from similar disasters!
