UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME : Please Read Carefully

Ok...so the PC was turned on Friday morning for it to just keep restarting.
When I try to launch in Safe Mode or to Last Known Good Configuration I get
the beloved blue screen message:

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage
to your computer.

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

Then it mentions about checking that any recently installed hardware or
software is installed properly...well nothing has been added for months so I
presume it can't be anything related to that. The message also mentions
disabling bios memory options such as caching or shadowing...now I don't know
enough about computers to understand what that is suggesting. It then gives
me the following stop message:

*** STOP: 0x000000ED (0x82F76E30, 0xC0000006, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

I have searched high and low through this groups to find an answer...I
cannot get into the Recovery Console to do CHKDSK/R, so I really am stuck as
to what to do. I have also opened the desktop and completely freed it from
dust, which last time I had a problem seemed to clean it up and improve the
performance of my computer. This has had no effect this time round however.
Any suggestions at all? I am going insane as I really don't know what I can
possibly do, particularly as it won't even let me run the Recovery Console or
Safe Mode or anything. I would be unbelievably grateful to any advice that
can be given whatsoever.

I've seen this more and more frequently on the IBM Thinkpads we have at
work. Yours may not be a thinkpad, but I'm guessing the situation is
similar.

Assuming that no hardware changes have been made, and no major software
changes have been made, there are 2 possibilities:

The least likely, but easier to deal with, is that the file system is
corrupt. Boot from your XP CD, enter the recovery console, and run
chkdsk /r. This may bring the system back to a bootable state.

More likely, and possibly the cause of the above condition, is that your
hard drive is failing. In that case, it will have to be replaced.

You _may_ be able to save your data. If you can use chkdsk /r to get
the system up and running, Back up your data immediately. If there have
been no hardware or software changes, your drive is probably about to
spin, vomit and die.

Stop 0x000000ED or UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
The kernel mode I/O subsystem attempted to mount the boot volume and it
failed. This error might also occur during an upgrade to Windows XP
Professional on systems that use higher throughput ATA disks or controllers
with incorrect cabling. In some cases, your system might appear to work
normally after you restart.

Interpreting the Message
This Stop message has two parameters:

1.. Device object of the boot volume
2.. Status code from the filesystem on why it failed to mount the volume
Resolving the Problem
The following suggestions are specific to Stop 0xED errors. For additional
troubleshooting suggestions that apply to all Stop errors, see "Stop Message
Checklist" later in this appendix.

a.. If using higher throughput ATA disks and controllers, those capable of
data transfer rates above 33.3 megabytes per second, replace the standard
40-pin cable with an 80-pin cable. Using an 80-pin cable is optional for
transfer rates up to and including 33.3 megabytes per second, but is
mandatory for higher transfer rates. The additional grounded pins are
required to avoid data loss.
b.. Some firmware enables you to force higher transfer rates even when you
are using the incorrect cable type. Your firmware might issue a warning but
allow the startup process to proceed. Restore the default firmware setting
for ATA cable detection.
c.. Problems that cause 0xED errors might also cause Stop 0x7B errors. For
more information about 0x7B Stop messages, see "Stop 0x0000007B or
INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE" earlier in this appendix.
I fear that your hard disk has failed. Try booting from the Windowx XP CD
and selecting R for the recovery consol. If it fails to find your Windows
folder then your disk has gone. If you are not familiar with this tool you
need to get expert assistance to see if your system can be recovered.

Why can't you run the Recovery Console? Have you tried using the boot floppy
set?

Since you've made no system changes, the more likely problem is file system
damage and running chkdsk /r is the solution. The other possibility is that
boot.ini is corrupt, in which case run fixboot may be the ticket. As both
are run from the Recovery Console, accessing it should be your first
priority.

I'm having the very same problem. When I boot off the XP CD, and select
recovery, it says "please install a hard drive", so I assume that the hard
drive is fried? I guess that means I need a new one.

When booting with the CD you probably need to press the F6 key when
prompted and supply the controller drivers on a floppy diskette.

What do you mean, supply the controller drivers on a floppy diskette? I
don't have a floppy drive... Also, when does it prompt me to hit F6?

What is the make and model number of your computer? Can you pull the
drive out and mount it in another computer? When you boot with the
Windows XP CD pay close attention to the prompts at the bottom of the
screen, you will see the prompt informing you to press F6 to load Mass
Storage Device drivers. Have a look in these search results for more
