unmountable boot volume

Hello,
After running defrag on my Dell Dimension 4700 running XP home my
machine crashed. I get 'unmountable boot volume' for an error. I
tried to run chkdsk /r from the recovery console. It took forever...
Let it run all night and it only got to 50%. I also tried fixboot to
no avail. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Go to the hard drive manufacturer's web site and download their free
diagnostic utility. Run it to check the drive for defects.

Good luck
